SDC experience now available in App Store

SDC experience now available in App Store

Taking the SPIN for a spin

Recently we launched something cool. For our retailers we created this fun app for tablets called the ‘SDC experience’, named after our product’s full name, the SPIN remote SDC-1. This app, together with a SPIN remote, gives an overview of what our remote is capable of.

When people visit stores that carry the SPIN remote, they have the chance to take our SPIN remote for a spin (pun entirely intended). The app shows a living room with a TV, two Sonos PLAY:1 speakers and a Philips Hue Bloom lamp.

Inception: demonstrating a demonstration app. Or watching a video of an app with a video.

Curious visitors can rotate the SPIN remote to see what happens. Rotating normally will dim the virtual lights, rotating upside down will show a gradient of light colors. Rotating the SPIN sideways will change the actual volume of the tablet. Cool, huh?

If you’d like to take a look at the SDC experience, you can download it from the App Store. We will let you know when and where you can find the SDC experience in real-life!

SPIN remote Works with Sonos

“These are the Sonos PLAY:1, PLAY:3 and PLAY:5. And this, this is the SPIN remote SDC-1.

With the SPIN remote SDC-1, you can very easily control the main functions of your Sonos speakers via gestures. For example you can change the volume, by rotating SPIN remote sideways. Or switch tracks, by rotating normally.

The SPIN remote SDC-1 also contains a smart touchpad at the bottom of the device. This touchpad is divided into 5 segments; Up, down, left, right and center. You can, for example, use this to play/pause your music. Or change tracks, by swiping on the touchpad.

Setting up your SPIN remote is very easy and very fast. You do this via the free App for Android and iOS. Let's take a look at how simple it actually is to control the volume of this PLAY:5 using the SPIN remote.

First you select the gesture, for example rotating sideways. Then you choose the function, volume. And the device, Sonos. Finally you select the room, or the speaker you want to control. In this case, PLAY:5. Hit save, and you're done. You can now use your SPIN remote, to control the volume of your Sonos speaker.

This is the SPIN remote demo kit, it's basically a living room in a box. It has its own Wi-Fi, we have a Sonos smart speaker, Philips Hue smart lights and a Samsung TV, which has an ordinary Infrared remote control.

Fact: The average household has 4 remote controls laying around in the living room. I'm sure you have one for your TV, another one for your set-top box, a third one for your A/V-receiver and even one for your mediacenter, like your Apple TV. So that's 160 buttons to choose from, when all you want to do is watch TV, or listen to some music.

And with more and more smart devices finding their way into the living room, smart speakers, smart lights, smart thermostats, smart doorlocks, we keep adding to that complexity. With different Apps and different interfaces required to control all of these devices.

Take smart lights for example; We've effectively turned a simple 1-step process of using the wall switch into a 5-click endeavour, having to grab your smartphone, entering an unlock code, finding a certain App, waiting for it to connect and moving a virtual slider. When all you want to do, is turn on the lights.

So why bother with all that complexity, when turning on the lights can again be as simple as this. Just like controlling the volume of your Sonos smart speaker, can be as simple as this.

And with SPIN remote, you can just as easily control your smart devices as you can control your existing, not-so-smart, Infrared devices. Like your TV or set-top box.

We currently support Sonos smart speakers, Philips Hue smart lights, LIFX smart lights, Denon Heos, Bose SoundTouch and much, much more yet to come. And on top of those smart devices, we support all popular Infrared devices, like your TV, set-top box, receiver and much, much more.
